My office receives numerous complaints about illegal aliens (immigrants). In 2007, I co-sponsored a bill, Senate Bill 202, which has been enacted into Tennessee law. This law is now designated Public Acts, 2007, Public Law 529, awaiting assignment for its Tennessee Code Annotated (T.C.A.) designation. Due to legal issues, we could not attach a monetary fine. We could and did enact a provision that would permit a citizen to file a complaint through any elected official about illegal alien employment. The official may file a form, entitled "Complaint" (Form LB-0989), with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. A first inspection of a business establishment, in which illegal alien workers are found, results in a warning and temporary license suspension. A subsequent inspection, in which illegal alien workers are found, results in license suspension for a one-year period.
